NSF GRFP cares about two things: helping the disenfranchised (broader impacts) and research (intellectual merit). Keep in mind there are other awards out there (/r/scholarships) and that even making it as a notable mention is something to put on your resume.

Jul 29, 2013 · When I applied for the NSF-GRFP, I found it very helpful to read over past successful applicants' experiences and have a look at their essays. I told myself that if I received the fellowship, I would do the same for future applicants.
